People surely notice when hair loss starts but what is the best way to find out in which level their hair falls out? Dr. James Hamilton-Norwood came up with a scale in order to identify how far your male pattern baldness become.
The Norwood Scale is a scale with degrees created to express the level of baldness in a single language. When the level of baldness is known and regularly tracked, it is easier to plan for a treatment and estimate the hair loss speed.
The scale has 7 stages. Stages have two different types; normal pattern and Class A pattern. The difference of Class A is that the hairline recedes from front to back with a deeper curve and hair at the top of the head area is not fallen out. As the number gets higher in this scale, the baldness gets more advanced.
Norwood Scale has been invented to measure the severity of male pattern hair loss; it is designed to be the common evaluation way about the stages and types of male pattern hair loss since male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss and the diagnosis is important to come up with the best solution.
Stage 1 is usually named as “control stage” in which no sign of hair loss or hair line receding is visible. Although it is a low chance, some men can stay in Stage 1 for their entire lives.
In Stage 2, slight recession of the hairline –usually in temples- can be observed however no hair loss occurs in the vertex of the scalp yet.
This stage of Norwood Scale is usually where the hair loss starts to become visible. Hair loss starts from the temples and proceed. In the Class A of Stage 3 (3A) the frontal area may experience more hair loss. In Vertex version of Stage 3, the hair loss may start to appear at the vertex area as a small bald spot.
Stage 4 refers to a clearly visible degree of hair loss. The hairline recedes further back and a have a deeper curve. The bald spot in the vertex of the scalp get larger however the hairy area between the vertex and the frontal scalp is still there. In Class A type of Stage 4, the hairline’s curve will be deeper and there will be no bald spot at the vertex.
In Stage 5 of Norwood Scale, the hair loss is clearly visible and more advanced than Stage 4; there is still a thin line of hair in between the vertex and frontal scalp however the hairline recedes more and the bald spot in the vertex gets bigger. In Class A version of this stage, the receding hairline is more advanced to the back of the head.
Stage 6 means the two bald areas of frontal scalp and top of the head joins together without a hairy part in between. There can still be hairy parts on the sides but the frontal and top areas are mostly bald in this stage.
In the last stage, the hair loss can also be seen in the sides of the head. The temples, frontal scalp and top of the head are bald in Stage 7.
A successful hair transplant requires a quality and abundant donor area; this scale is very beneficial to decide whether a patient is suitable for hair transplant or not.
Patients between the stages of 1 and 4 of Norwood Scale are usually the ideal candidates for hair transplants; patients who suffer from hair loss over the stage 4 need a detailed consultation with a hair transplant specialist to decide if they can benefit from the treatment as the examination of the donor area is important in higher stages.
